The Mathemagician and Pied Puzzler: A Collection in Tribute to Martin Gardner

Tom Rodgers

AK Peters, Ltd. | 1999 | 266 páginas | PDF | 2,3 Mb

On line  : gathering4gardner.files.wordpress.com

This volume comprises an imaginative collection of pieces created in tribute to Martin Gardner. Perhaps best known for writing Scientific American's "Mathematical Games" column for years, Gardner used his personal exuberance and fascination with puzzles and magic to entice a wide range of readers into a world of mathematical discovery. This tribute therefore contains pieces as widely varied as Gardner's own interests, ranging from limericks to lengthy treatises, from mathematical journal articles to personal stories. This book makes a charming and unusual addition to any personal library. Selected papers: - The Odyssey of the Figure Eight Puzzle by Stewart Coffin - Block-Packing Jambalaya by Bill Cutler - O'Beirne's Hexiamond by Richard K. Guy - Biblical Ladders by Donald E. Knuth - Three Limericks: On Space, Time and Speed by Tim Rowett.

Forces created by the proliferation of computer hardware and software, by innovative methods of mathematical modelling and applications, by broader demographic considerations, and by schools themselves are profoundly changing the way mathematics is practiced, the way mathematics is taught, and the way mathematics is learned. In this volume, a vision of the richness of mathematics is expressed and illustrated as five different possible strands of school mathematics through the expansion on the theme of mathematics as the language and science of patterns with emphases on interconnections and communalities. Included are: (1) an introduction to the five sample strands with examples of the continuity underlying the fundamentals of mathematics, of the mathematical connections that both unite and repeat, and of the mathematical perspective necessary to view both the variety and the regularity of patterns; (2) the Dimension strand, which focuses on the development of relationships between the different dimensions with emphasis on three-dimensional topics; (3) the Quantity strand, which provides insights into the three basic tasks of measuring, ordering, and coding with attendant symbologies and procedures; (4) the Uncertainty strand, which develops ideas about the natural themes and strategies within the twin concepts of data and chance; (5) the Shape strand, which uses classification to discover similarities and differences among objects, analysis to discern the components of form, and representation to recognize and comprehend shapes within different contexts; and (6) the Change strand, which advocates imaginative and sensitive responses to the constantly emerging new types of patterns, including patterns of thinking about nature, as well as mathematics.

Measuring What Counts: A Conceptual Guide for Mathematics Assessment

Mathematical Sciences Education Board, National Research Council

National Academies Press | 1993 | 236 páginas | PDF | 1,1 Mb

Livro on-line: books.nap.edu

To achieve national goals for education, we must measure the things that really count. "Measuring What Counts" establishes crucial research-based connections between standards and assessment. Arguing for a better balance between educational and measurement concerns in the development and use of mathematics assessment, this book sets forth three principles - related to content, learning, and equity - that can form the basis for new assessments that support emerging national standards in mathematics education.

Chance, Luck, and Statistics

Horace C. Levinson

Dover Publications | 2001 | 384 páginas | PDF | 12 Mb

on-line: dspace.ucalgary.ca

Descrição: In simple, nontechnical language, this volume explores the fundamentals governing chance and applies them to sports, government, business, and other fields. Part I concerns the theory of probability in relation to superstitions, fallacies, and betting odds. Part II applies probability theory to statistics, including its relevance to warfare, sports, social problems, stocks, and other areas. "The style is clear and lively. The treatment ... is remarkably accurate. In short, it is a good book."--Scientific Monthly.
